What is a division?
Divisions and subgroups
A division splits a class into smaller groups called subgroups. You use them when only part of a class attends a lesson together.
For example, a class might have a PE division with two subgroups: Boys and Girls. This way, both groups can have PE at the same time, each with their own teacher.
Naming conventions
A Division name (e.g., Languages, PE, or Electives) identifies the division. Each subgroup within it gets its own name (e.g., French, German, or Spanish).
| Division name | Subgroups |
|---|---|
| Beginner Languages | French, German, Spanish |
| PE | Boys, Girls |
| Computer Science | s1, s2 |
How divisions affect scheduling
Divisions affect scheduling in two ways:
- Parallel scheduling: Subgroups in the same division can attend different lessons at the same time.
- Gap prevention: We try to align subgroup lessons so all students in the class are busy at the same time, keeping free periods to a minimum.
